Superbowl Sunday is just around the corner. Americans consume tons of snacks during Superbowl Sunday. According to the snack Food Association and Forbes.com, below are statistics on snacks consumed during the ball game:

  • 11.2 million pounds of potato chips
  • 8.2 million pounds of tortilla chips
  • 3.8 million pounds of popcorn
  • 3 million pounds of nuts

Pizza tops the list as one of the most ordered items during Superbowl.

Tired of serving the same stuff year after year, pizza, chicken wings? Below are some new ideas from the Frothingham Park staff to elevate Superbowl snacks to a new level.

chicken wontonInstead of chicken wings, Buffalo wonton cups.
Mix store bought chicken with mayonnaise, sour cream and hot sauce. Spray a muffin pan with non-stick spray and place a wonton in each muffin cup. Fill each wonton with chicken filling, and put in the oven at 350 degrees for 10 minutes or until wontons are a bit browned on the edges.

Instead of salsa and chips, hummus topped with salad with pita chips.
Spread store bought hummus on a plate with an edge, top with chopped tomatoes, cucumbers, crumbled feta and black olives. Serve with store bought pita chips

Instead of nuts, Edamame beans (soy beans).
Find these in the freezer section of most supermarkets. edamame

Throw the frozen Edamames in hot water for 3 minutes until tender, drain, sprinkle salt liberally on top and serve. People love them, plus they are healthy!

Purchase ready made flat bread pizza dough at the supermarket.
Try these combination toppings:
Caprese pizza: Fresh mozarella, basil and tomatoes – add mozarella and tomato to flatbread, bake, then top with fresh basil.
Arugula, Proscuitto and ricotta cheese: Spread ricotta on flatbread, bake, top with Proscuitto and fresh Arugula.
Buffalo chicken: Use store bought chicken and mix with barbecue sauce, top flatbread and bake.

breadsticksInstead of pretzels, bread sticks with bacon.
Spread brown sugar on each bacon slice and wrap around a breadstick. Bake in oven until bacon is cooked and browned.
